eXistenZ (1999)
A game designer on the run from assassins must play her latest virtual reality creation with a marketing trainee to determine if the game has been damaged.
What people think about eXistenZ
eXistenZ is the rare science-fiction thriller that feels like it’s thinking in real time, constantly pulling the rug out from under your assumptions with a mischievous, brainy grin. David Cronenberg turns virtual reality into something tactile and unnervingly organic, where the sleek future is replaced by flesh, texture, and a creeping sense that the rules are being rewritten as you watch. Jennifer Jason Leigh is electric as the coolly charismatic designer at the center of the chaos, and Jude Law makes an ideal audience surrogate—skeptical, rattled, and strangely compelled to keep going. It’s witty, audacious, and visually unforgettable, though if body-horror imagery and squirm-inducing bio-tech make your skin crawl, fair warning: that discomfort is part of the ride.
eXistenZ is Cronenberg trying to mash up a paranoid VR mind-bender with his signature “the body is the technology” weirdness, and on that level it’s admirably committed. The problem is it can feel intentionally disjointed: the story keeps slipping away just when you want it to lock into something satisfying, and the characters sometimes play more like pieces on a board than people you care about. If you’re looking for clean rules, strong emotional stakes, or action-thriller momentum, this may read as confusing and oddly flat despite the clever premise. But if you enjoy slippery reality games, deadpan performances, and queasy bio-tech imagery (including some nasty gore), it’s a distinctive little trip that’s more about mood and ideas than payoff.
