Vampires (1998)

Vampires is John Carpenter cutting the vampire myth down to its grimiest essentials and then electrifying it with a sun-baked, hard-boiled swagger that feels like a Western with fangs. James Woods is gloriously abrasive as Jack Crow, a hunter whose wisecracks and rage make the action punch harder, while Carpenter’s lean direction turns cheap motels, dusty roads, and sudden ambushes into a nasty little universe you can almost smell. The movie’s pleasures are tactile: practical gore, crunchy sound and light, and a simple, propulsive chase that never forgets to have a wicked sense of humor about its own depravity. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone looking for romantic, elegant vampires—but if you want disreputable, muscular horror-action from a filmmaker who knows exactly how to make B-movie ingredients sing, this one bites deep.

Vampires wants to be a rough-and-ready, no-nonsense vampire-hunting romp with John Carpenter’s gritty attitude and a simple “kill the monster before it levels up” premise. The problem is it often plays like a string of loud confrontations stitched together with thin plotting, and the characters are intentionally abrasive to the point where you may not enjoy spending time with them, even when the movie is trying to be funny or tough. If you’re hoping for clever mythology, suspenseful horror, or anyone to root for, this can feel predictable and kind of ridiculous in a way that undercuts the stakes. Still, if you can handle the sleaze, gore, and attitude, there are flashes of Carpenter-style atmosphere and some satisfyingly nasty action that might make it a decent late-night watch.
