The Prince of Egypt (1998)

The imagery feels carved out of stone and sunlight—towering temples, rushing waters, shadows that look like they carry history—while Hans Zimmer’s score and Stephen Schwartz’s songs don’t just decorate scenes, they lift them into something stirring and soulful. Val Kilmer and Ralph Fiennes give Moses and Rameses a surprisingly human ache, turning their bond into the film’s beating heart even when destiny pulls them apart. It can be intense for younger kids and it’s unabashedly reverent, but if you’re on the fence, this is one of the rare animated films that plays like a true big-screen event and still finds room for real emotion.

The Prince of Egypt is aiming for a sincere, big-screen retelling of Exodus, treating the story with real gravity and a “prestige” animated style rather than goofy family comedy. When it works, the visuals are gorgeous, the scale is impressive, and the central brother-versus-brother conflict gives it a strong dramatic spine. But if you need warmth, humor, or a breezy pace, the film can feel solemn to a fault, with uneven stretches where the storytelling and songs don’t always land emotionally as hard as the spectacle suggests they should.
