Permanent Midnight (1998)

Permanent Midnight is special because it takes the familiar “addiction drama” template and jolts it awake with the jagged, self-lacerating wit of a comedy writer who can’t stop narrating his own disaster. Ben Stiller gives one of his most fearless performances, funny in the way desperation can be funny and heartbreaking in the way denial keeps moving the goalposts, and the film’s restless energy makes Los Angeles feel like a neon-lit treadmill you can’t step off. It’s unsparing about the mechanics and consequences of drug use, yet it finds bleak, human humor in the small lies and rationalizations that prop up a collapsing life. Fair warning: the R-rated drug content is intense and not for everyone, but if you want a raw, darkly alive character study that hits hard without preaching, this one lingers.

Permanent Midnight is clearly trying to be an unglamorous, semi-autobiographical plunge into addiction, using showbiz success as a cruel counterpoint to self-destruction. The problem is it’s built like a string of grim episodes wrapped in a framing device that doesn’t add much, so the story can feel aimless rather than steadily tragic. Because you don’t get a strong sense of who Jerry is before the drugs, the film leans heavily on shock and repetition to make its point, which may leave you numb instead of moved. Still, Ben Stiller is surprisingly committed and raw, and if you want a dark, uncomfortable character study with explicit drug use and little catharsis, it delivers—just don’t expect a tightly structured narrative or an easy emotional hook.
