The Opposite of Sex (1998)

The Opposite of Sex is the kind of wickedly smart comedy-drama that feels like it’s telling the truth with a grin—sharp, fearless, and oddly tender when you least expect it. Don Roos’ script crackles with dialogue that’s both laugh-out-loud funny and uncomfortably insightful, and Christina Ricci is mesmerizing as a teenage hurricane who blows through everyone’s carefully managed lives with alarming charisma. The movie’s vibe is tart and offbeat, flirting with taboo and dark humor while still making room for real bruises and real affection, especially in the way it treats grief, family, and the messiness of desire. It’s not for viewers who want tidy morals or purely likable characters, but if you’re on the fence and crave something daring, grown-up, and genuinely fresh, this one rewards you with bite, heart, and a lot of nerve.

The Opposite of Sex is aiming for a sharp, modern screwball tragedy-comedy where selfish people collide and the humor comes from watching them rationalize the damage they cause. The problem is it’s intentionally prickly: the tone can feel bitter and the characters are so manipulative that you may spend more time wanting them to stop than enjoying the ride.
