The Newton Boys (1998)

What makes The Newton Boys special is how it turns a “true crime” saga into something unexpectedly human: a period caper with a gentle pulse, where the thrills come from brains and brotherhood as much as bravado. Richard Linklater brings his light touch to the genre, letting the 1920s atmosphere breathe in the clothes, the smoke-hazed rooms, and the rhythm of small-town ambition, while keeping the violence relatively restrained for a bank-robbery movie. Matthew McConaughey anchors the film with an easy charisma that never feels smug, and the ensemble—Ethan Hawke and Skeet Ulrich especially—gives the gang a lived-in, familial chemistry that makes their choices feel plausible even when you don’t approve. If you want a hard-edged, trigger-happy crime picture this isn’t it, but if you’re on the fence, it’s a surprisingly graceful, entertaining ride that makes the era and the people feel real.

The Newton Boys wants to be a laid-back, almost folksy true-crime caper about smart, low-violence robberies and the brotherhood that powers them, and you can feel Linklater aiming for character-first charm over shootouts. The problem is that the same easygoing tone that makes it pleasant also drains the story of urgency, so the robberies can start to feel like a series of episodes rather than a gripping rise-and-fall. McConaughey, Hawke, and Ulrich are likable enough, and the period vibe is solid, but the film can come off a bit diffuse and emotionally hollow when it should be tightening the screws. If you want tense crime drama with a strong narrative hook, this may frustrate you; if you’re happy to just hang out with a mellow outlaw story, it’s an easy watch.
