Jane Austen's Mafia! (1998)
After growing up poor in Salmonella, Vincenzo Cortino installs himself as the preeminent, if bumbling, Mafia don of the New World. But now he must pass on power to one of his two sons: either level-headed veteran Anthony or vituperative loose cannon Joey.
What people think about Jane Austen's Mafia!
Jane Austen’s Mafia! is a gleefully shameless machine-gun spoof that treats the entire solemn mythology of mob epics like a piñata, and it’s a pleasure watching it swing until candy falls out. Jim Abrahams keeps the pace so brisk you barely have time to predict a joke before another sight gag, verbal flip, or absurd escalation crashes the scene, and the cast commits with straight-faced confidence that makes the silliness land. Jay Mohr and Christina Applegate, in particular, bring a lively, game-for-anything charm that turns even throwaway moments into punchlines, while the film’s crime-movie trappings give the comedy a satisfyingly familiar runway. It won’t be for you if you prefer subtle satire or coherent realism, but if you want an energetic, rapid-fire parody that exists purely to make you laugh at the seriousness of gangster cinema, this one earns its place on the couch.
Jane Austen’s Mafia! is trying to be a broad, Naked Gun-style spoof of classic gangster epics, cramming in sight gags, voiceover jokes, and nonstop parody of The Godfather’s most famous beats. The problem is that a lot of the humor feels like obvious pop-culture winks and repeated punchlines rather than clever escalation, so if you’re not laughing early, it becomes a long sit. Performances are game (Christina Applegate in particular brings energy), and a few visual gags land, but the writing rarely finds the sharp absurdity that made this director’s best spoofs sing. If you love silly, low-effort parody and don’t mind jokes that swing wildly and miss often, you might have fun; if you want tight satire or genuinely inventive comedy, this probably isn’t for you.
