After growing up poor in Salmonella, Vincenzo Cortino installs himself as the preeminent, if bumbling, Mafia don of the New World. But now he must pass on power to one of his two sons: either level-headed veteran Anthony or vituperative loose cannon Joey.

Explained

What people think about Jane Austen's Mafia!

Jane Austen’s Mafia! is a gleefully shameless machine-gun spoof that treats the entire solemn mythology of mob epics like a piñata, and it’s a pleasure watching it swing until candy falls out. Jim Abrahams keeps the pace so brisk you barely have time to predict a joke before another sight gag, verbal flip, or absurd escalation crashes the scene, and the cast commits with straight-faced confidence that makes the silliness land. Jay Mohr and Christina Applegate, in particular, bring a lively, game-for-anything charm that turns even throwaway moments into punchlines, while the film’s crime-movie trappings give the comedy a satisfyingly familiar runway. It won’t be for you if you prefer subtle satire or coherent realism, but if you want an energetic, rapid-fire parody that exists purely to make you laugh at the seriousness of gangster cinema, this one earns its place on the couch.
