In Dreams is clearly aiming for a stylish, psychological nightmare where motherhood, grief, and clairvoyance blur into one unsettling mystery, and Neil Jordan does bring a moody, surreal atmosphere to the table. The problem is the story plays by dream rules so often that the “thriller” part can feel slippery and, frankly, a bit silly—clues and motivations arrive when convenient, and the plot coherence takes a hit. If you need a mystery that locks into place logically and builds suspense through clear cause-and-effect, this will likely frustrate you, especially with its heavy, R-rated violence and disturbing imagery. But if you can tolerate confusion in exchange for eerie visuals and Annette Bening committing hard to an emotionally battered lead, you may find it more hypnotic than satisfying.
