The General (1998)

The General is special because it turns a notorious true-crime figure into a full-blooded human paradox: charismatic, reckless, funny in the darkest way, and quietly unnerving. John Boorman directs with a storyteller’s confidence, letting Dublin’s grit and gallows wit seep into every scene until the city feels like an accomplice, not just a backdrop. At the center is Brendan Gleeson, giving a magnetic performance that makes you understand how a man like Martin Cahill could become both folk hero and ticking time bomb without asking you to excuse him. If you want a clean moral lesson or a conventional cops-and-robbers rush, this may feel too sly and morally foggy—but if you like crime dramas that are as psychologically rich as they are entertaining, it’s hard to shake.

The General is aiming for a gritty, semi-mythic crime portrait of Martin Cahill as a charismatic outlaw caught between the cops, paramilitaries, and his own crew. The problem is the film can drift: the pacing is uneven, and it sometimes feels more fascinated with Cahill’s swagger than willing to interrogate the damage he causes, which may read as glamorizing. The black-and-white look gives it a dour edge, but it’s not always used in a way that adds much beyond mood, so if you’re expecting stylish visual storytelling, you might be underwhelmed. If you’re not already interested in Irish crime history and its specific political backdrop, this may feel oddly remote—though Brendan Gleeson’s presence and the rough, lived-in atmosphere do provide some pull.
