What people think about Hard Rain
Hard Rain is the kind of mid-’90s action-thriller that earns its title: it’s slick, relentless, and powered by a genuinely inspired hook—an entire heist movie taking place in a town being swallowed by a flood. Director Mikael Salomon turns rising water into a ticking clock and a weapon, staging chases and shootouts that feel freshly dangerous because the environment keeps changing under everyone’s feet, while Morgan Freeman brings a cool, commanding presence that makes every standoff crackle. It moves with terrific pace, sneaking in flashes of grim humor and small-town texture between bursts of tension, and the practical effects still deliver that satisfying, physical sense of chaos. If you’re looking for deep character study, this isn’t it—but if you want a tight, high-concept ride where the set pieces keep escalating and the water never stops coming, it’s an easy recommendation.
Hard Rain is clearly trying to be a high-concept, disaster-soaked action thriller where the flood is as much the villain as the thieves, and on that level it delivers a steady stream of wet, chaotic set pieces. The problem is the story logic is so flimsy and the twists so convenient that you may find yourself rolling your eyes between shootouts instead of feeling any real tension. Performances from Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater add some gravitas, and the practical flood staging has a gritty, physical punch that still plays well. If you can treat it like a loud B-movie ride and don’t need believable motivations or tight plotting, you’ll have fun; if you want smart crime-thriller credibility, this will likely irritate you.
