Strike! (1998)

Strike! is the kind of coming-of-age comedy-drama that sneaks up on you: it’s fizzy and mischievous on the surface, then quietly lands with the punch of a sincere, clear-eyed rallying cry about being heard. Set in a wintry 1963 New England girls’ academy, it captures the push-pull between strict expectations and private rebellion with real affection for its characters, letting Kirsten Dunst, Gaby Hoffmann, and Monica Keena make their friendships feel lived-in rather than “movie cute.” The vibe is part nostalgia, part righteous prankster energy, building from dorm-room confessions and everyday humiliations into a satisfying surge of solidarity. It’s not for everyone—its tone can be broad and its era-specific trappings are front and center—but if you want a warm, funny, feminist crowd-pleaser that actually likes its heroines, it’s an easy recommendation.

Strike! is clearly trying to be a cheeky, feminist coming-of-age romp about girls fighting for agency in a buttoned-up 1963 boarding school, and the premise is genuinely fun. The problem is it can’t quite decide what it wants to be: one minute it’s broad, prankish farce, the next it swerves into heavier teen-drama territory, and the tonal whiplash can make the whole thing feel a bit ungainly. If you’re expecting a sharp, consistently witty satire or a grounded, emotionally cohesive drama, this may leave you restless. Still, the cast is likable (Dunst and Hoffmann especially), and when the movie leans into the girls’ solidarity and rebellious spirit, it hits a sweet spot that might be enough if you’re in the mood for something scrappy and slightly uneven.
