Stepmom (1998)

Stepmom is special because it takes a familiar setup—divorce, remarriage, bruised loyalties—and treats it with the kind of emotional intelligence that sneaks up on you, earning its tears instead of demanding them. Chris Columbus keeps the tone warmly human, letting sharp little bits of wit and everyday awkwardness sit right beside the ache, and that balance makes the story feel lived-in rather than melodramatic. Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon don’t play “rivals” so much as two fully realized women fighting for footing in a family that’s shifting under them, with Ed Harris grounding the whole thing in quiet decency. It’s not for everyone if you’re avoiding movies about illness or you want your catharsis without a lump in your throat, but if you’re open to something tender, smart, and ultimately life-affirming, it’s the kind of film that can leave you a little softer than you were before.

Stepmom is aiming for a grown-up, blended-family tearjerker about two women learning to co-parent under the worst possible circumstances, and you can feel the sincerity behind that goal. The problem is it often plays like it’s yanking the emotional steering wheel on purpose—big conversations, perfectly timed crises, and a sentimental sheen that can make the drama feel engineered rather than earned. If you’re allergic to “prestige” melodrama or you want a more nuanced, less manipulative take on illness and divorce, this may frustrate you even as it tries to move you. Still, Roberts and Sarandon are strong enough to sell a lot of it, and if you’re in the mood for a cathartic cry with a glossy, mainstream touch, it does deliver that reliably.
