Godzilla (1998)

Godzilla (1998) is pure big-city spectacle, the kind of glossy, loud, turn-your-brain-off-and-grin blockbuster that turns Manhattan into a playground for panic, pursuit, and popcorn thrills. Roland Emmerich stages the mayhem like a theme-park ride—towering scale, relentless momentum, and effects that still deliver that satisfying “how are they going to top this?” energy from scene to scene. Matthew Broderick brings an affable, fish-out-of-water charm, while Jean Reno adds a cool, sly counterbalance that keeps the movie from feeling like just another military-versus-monster slugfest. It’s not for purists expecting classic Godzilla mythmaking, but if you want a slick, crowd-pleasing creature feature with real cinematic bigness, it’s an easy, entertaining watch.

Godzilla (1998) is clearly trying to deliver a modern, big-budget monster disaster movie with Roland Emmerich-style scale, constant movement, and a “New York under siege” thrill ride. The problem is that the human side is thin and often annoying, with a script that leans on clichés and coincidence, so the destruction ends up feeling louder than it is exciting. If you’re coming for the tone, mythology, or weight of classic Godzilla, this plays more like a generic creature-on-the-loose chase movie wearing the name, and that mismatch is where a lot of the disappointment comes from. On the upside, there are a few fun set pieces and Jean Reno brings some much-needed energy, so it can work as a turn-your-brain-off ’90s popcorn watch—just don’t expect depth or memorable characters.
