Wishmaster (1997)

Wishmaster is special because it turns the simple childhood fantasy of “make a wish” into a wickedly clever horror engine, where every desire becomes a trapdoor and the movie delights in the terrible poetry of consequences. Robert Kurtzman stages it with a showman’s energy and a proudly practical, gooey imagination, delivering set pieces that feel like a carnival haunted house built by effects artists who want to one-up themselves. Andrew Divoff’s Djinn is the real hook: charismatic, theatrical, and genuinely menacing, he sells the fun of the premise while keeping the threat sharp enough to sting. If you’re squeamish about graphic gore or prefer your scares subtle, it may be too loud and messy—but if you want a brisk, nasty, high-concept ’90s creature feature that knows exactly what it is, this one grants the wish.

Wishmaster is clearly trying to be a nasty little fairy tale for horror fans: a slick, wish-granting demon setup where every desire backfires in the most grotesque way possible. When it works, it’s because Andrew Divoff commits hard to the villain and the practical effects deliver some enjoyably gnarly, imagination-driven kills. The problem is the movie often confuses “loud and bloody” with “scary,” and the script’s wish rules and plotting can feel inconsistent enough that you stop caring who’s next. If you want coherent mythology, strong acting, or actual suspense, this will likely irritate you; if you’re here for mean-spirited, effects-heavy ‘90s gore with a campy villain at the center, it may still hit the spot.
