Star Kid (1997)

Star Kid is special because it takes a kid-power fantasy you’ve seen before and gives it a surprisingly warm pulse: a shy seventh-grader doesn’t just get “cool gear,” he gets an unlikely companion with a personality, a conscience, and a gently funny way of pushing him toward courage. Manny Coto keeps the tone breezy and family-friendly, mixing after-school awkwardness with sci-fi adventure in a way that feels more sweetly human than cynically loud, and the effects hold up better than you’d expect for a ’90s PG romp. The action has enough punch to feel exciting without tipping into mean-spirited, and the movie’s real pleasure is watching confidence grow one small choice at a time. If you’re allergic to earnest, kid-centered storytelling, it may feel a little corny—but if you want a charming, crowd-pleasing throwback with heart and a few sly laughs, this one earns its place in the junkyard treasure pile.

Star Kid is clearly aiming for a kid-friendly Iron Man-style fantasy: a bullied middle-schooler gets a wisecracking alien exosuit and uses it to grow a spine while stopping a space baddie. The problem is the execution feels cheap and familiar, with clunky dialogue, a lot of juvenile bodily-function humor, and action scenes that drag when they should be the fun part. If you’re expecting sharp sci-fi thrills or slick choreography, this will test your patience, and the lead can come off more whiny than charming depending on your tolerance. But if you’re in the mood for a very ‘90s, PG, Saturday-afternoon kind of adventure with a sweet coming-of-age message and a goofy robot buddy, it can still be mildly entertaining.
