Vulgar (2002)

Vulgar is the kind of fearless, scrappy indie that dares you to look at a clown and feel something other than comfort or cheap laughs—then keeps pushing until that image becomes genuinely unsettling and strangely human. Bryan Johnson steers it with a grimy, street-level immediacy, letting Brian O’Halloran’s performance carry you through a world where humiliation, desperation, and the hunger for reinvention all collide. The film’s power is in its audacity and its relentless descent into revenge-thriller darkness, taking a provocative premise and refusing to soften it into something safer or more “tasteful.” It’s absolutely not for everyone—there’s extreme content and it wants to disturb—but if you can handle a brutal, confrontational ride, it’s a memorable gut-punch that lingers long after the credits.

Vulgar is clearly trying to mash up grimy indie crime drama with shock-horror and a dark character study about a man reclaiming power after being destroyed, and that intention is easy to see. The problem is the execution: the tone lurches between sleaze, melodrama, and awkward camp, and the acting and story logic often feel so amateurish that the movie can’t land the emotional weight it’s reaching for. It also contains an extended, deeply disturbing sexual assault that isn’t just “edgy” but genuinely punishing to sit through, and many viewers will find it exploitative rather than meaningful. If you’re curious about early View Askewniverse-adjacent oddities or can tolerate rough, low-budget provocation, there are a few raw moments and an interesting central idea—but most people will be better off skipping it unless they know exactly what they’re signing up for.
