Steel (1997)

Steel is the kind of earnest, comic-book throwback that wears its heart right on the armor plating: a scrappy, good-versus-evil adventure powered less by cynicism than by sheer can-do spirit. Shaquille O’Neal brings an unexpectedly warm, easygoing presence to John Henry Irons, making the hero feel like a decent man trying to do the right thing, even when his homemade tech sputters and the world doesn’t cooperate. The vibe is bright, breezy, and unapologetically Saturday-afternoon—gadgets, one-liners, and straightforward action with a wholesome streak—anchored by Annabeth Gish’s grounded energy and Richard Roundtree’s comforting authority. It’s not for viewers hunting for dark realism or polished blockbuster finesse, but if you’re in the mood for a light, good-natured superhero curio with a big-hearted lead, it’s a surprisingly pleasant ride.

Steel is clearly trying to be a bright, kid-friendly superhero romp with a simple moral about taking responsibility for the weapons you create, and there’s a certain charm in its earnest, comic-book sincerity. The problem is it plays more like a low-budget TV pilot stretched to feature length: the pacing is sluggish, the action is clunky, and the effects and costumes can look unintentionally goofy even by 1997 standards. Shaquille O’Neal has presence, but not much range here, and the supporting cast often feels stranded in broad, episodic scenes that don’t build real momentum.
