State and Main is one of those rare Hollywood comedies that’s actually about people, not punchlines—David Mamet turns a simple “film crew invades a small town” setup into a nimble, warmhearted satire where every line lands with the snap of perfectly timed dialogue. The vibe is genial chaos: egos, contracts, moral compromises, and hometown pride all ricochet off each other, but the movie never turns mean, finding real affection for both the locals and the hustlers who blow into town. Alec Baldwin is gloriously slippery, Philip Seymour Hoffman gives the kind of anxious, human performance that makes you laugh and wince at the same time, and the whole ensemble feels like it’s playing jazz at a high speed.
