Soldier (1998)

Soldier is one of those lean, muscular sci-fi action films that sneaks up on you by letting Kurt Russell do something rare: carry a whole movie with grit, scars, and silence, turning a near-wordless performance into its own kind of poetry. Paul W. S. Anderson gives the future a grimy, industrial texture and stages the violence with blunt conviction—less shiny spectacle than hard-earned survival—while still delivering that pulpy, comic-book energy that makes the ride fun. Beneath the gunfire, it’s also a surprisingly tender story about a man engineered for war trying to learn what being human even feels like, and that contrast gives the mayhem weight instead of emptiness. It’s not for viewers who want intricate world-building or a chatty script, and the R-rated brutality is real, but if you’re on the fence and want a tough, sincere action-drama with heart beating under the armor, this one deserves a look.

Soldier is clearly trying to be a stripped-down sci‑fi fable about a man bred for war learning what humanity looks like, then cashing that growth in during a last-stand action finale. The problem is it’s so blunt and familiar that the “character journey” often feels like a checklist, and the world-building leans on recycled genre parts rather than anything genuinely surprising. Kurt Russell’s stone-faced commitment and the grimy, industrial look give it some weight, and the action has a satisfyingly physical, no-nonsense punch, but don’t expect sharp dialogue, deep emotion, or inventive storytelling. If you enjoy lean, violent, old-school action with minimal talking and don’t mind a very derivative plot, it’ll do the job; if you want thoughtful sci‑fi drama or originality, your time is probably better spent elsewhere.
