Playing God (1997)

Playing God has the pulpy, late-’90s thrill of a noir crime ride, but what makes it worth your time is how it lets its characters breathe inside the danger. David Duchovny gives Dr. Eugene Sands a bruised charm that sells both the medical competence and the self-destructive drift, while Timothy Hutton turns the kingpin Raymond Blossom into something more than a plot device—wry, unpredictable, and oddly watchable even when he’s terrifying. The movie moves on a steady current of dark humor and sharp dialogue, with Angelina Jolie adding a volatile spark that keeps every scene slightly off-balance. It’s not the slickest thriller of its era and it doesn’t shy away from addiction and violence, but if you like crime stories where the tension comes from personality as much as gunfire, this one has a nasty little grip.
