Phantoms (1998)
In the peaceful Colorado town of Snowfield, something evil has wiped out the community. And now, it's up to a group of people to stop it, or at least get out of Snowfield alive.
What people think about Phantoms
Phantoms is the kind of late-’90s creature thriller that wins you over by taking its own pulp nightmare seriously, dropping you into a snow-quiet Colorado town where the silence feels louder than any scream. Joe Chappelle stages the early “where did everyone go?” dread with terrific, empty-street atmosphere, then tightens the vise with suspenseful set pieces that keep the threat unsettlingly unknowable. Peter O’Toole brings real gravitas as the scientist trying to name the unnameable, while Ben Affleck and Rose McGowan ground the panic in believable human reactions rather than winking genre clichés. It is definitely not for the gore-averse, but if you like your horror with a sci-fi brain, a straight face, and a creeping sense that the town itself is watching, it’s a satisfying, underrated ride.
Phantoms wants to be a smart, small-town apocalypse mystery that gradually reveals a Lovecraft-lite threat, and the opening stretch in an empty, corpse-strewn Snowfield genuinely delivers some creepy atmosphere. The problem is that once the explanations start, the movie turns into a talky, muddled info-dump with clunky dialogue and a mythology that feels both overcomplicated and weirdly familiar. The scares can slip into “wait, what?” territory as the creature’s rules keep shifting, which makes the tension leak out instead of building. If you enjoy late-’90s studio horror with gooey effects, a few nasty set pieces, and Peter O’Toole trying to lend gravitas to pulpy material, you might have fun; if you want clean storytelling and sustained dread, this likely won’t be your town.
