Pardes is that rare Bollywood romance that feels sweeping and intimate at the same time, using its cross-continental setting to ask what “home” and “values” really mean when love is on the line. Subhash Ghai stages the drama with old-school grandeur—lush songs, big emotions, and a steady pulse of sincerity—while grounding it in the ache of culture shock and the quiet comfort of finding someone who truly sees you. Shah Rukh Khan brings a gentle, wounded decency that makes the film’s emotional turns land, and Mahima Chaudhry gives Ganga a strength that’s more than just wide-eyed innocence. It’s undeniably melodramatic and proudly traditional in its storytelling, so if you don’t like long, song-filled epics this won’t convert you—but if you do, it’s a heartfelt, crowd-pleasing ride with real emotional stakes.

Pardes is trying to be a glossy, big-hearted NRI romance that contrasts “traditional values” with Western excess, and when it leans into music, emotion, and Shah Rukh Khan’s sincerity, it absolutely works. The problem is it’s also a very long, very melodramatic ride that treats serious issues as plot accelerators, so the tonal swings can feel jarring and a bit manipulative rather than organic. If you’re not already on board with ’90s Bollywood pacing, heavy-handed moral messaging, and broad character strokes, this will test your patience. But if you want sweeping songs, family drama, and a clear “good vs bad” romantic arc anchored by strong performances (especially SRK and Amrish Puri), it can still be an engaging time capsule.
