Nothing to Lose (1997)
Advertising executive Nick Beame learns that his wife is sleeping with his employer. In a state of despair, he encounters a bumbling thief whose attempted carjacking goes awry when Nick takes him on an involuntary joyride. Soon the betrayed businessman and the incompetent crook strike up a partnership and develop a robbery-revenge scheme. But it turns out that some other criminals in the area don't appreciate the competition.
What people think about Nothing to Lose
Nothing to Lose is the kind of buddy-comedy fuse that lights fast and keeps crackling, taking a miserable midlife implosion and turning it into a sunbaked, high-speed misadventure with real momentum. Tim Robbins plays frazzled desperation with a straight-faced sweetness that makes the chaos funnier, while Martin Lawrence brings a loose, streetwise energy that turns every bad decision into a punchline—and together they click in that rare way where you believe these two opposites could actually become partners. The vibe is broad, breezy, and slightly cartoonish in its action-comedy rhythms, more about comic escalation and personality than gritty crime realism. If you like your laughs loud and your plot happily implausible, it’s a surprisingly winning ride; if you prefer subtle humor, it may feel a bit over-the-top.
Nothing to Lose is trying to be a high-energy odd-couple romp where a buttoned-up guy in freefall and a lovable screwup criminal collide and stumble into a revenge-heist adventure. The problem is it often feels like it’s checking off “buddy comedy” and “action set piece” boxes rather than building momentum, so the story can come off shapeless and the jokes a bit forced. If you’re picky about tight plotting, consistent tone, or comedy that lands more cleverly than loudly, this one may test your patience. Still, Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence have enough chemistry to keep it watchable in bursts, and if you just want a mid-’90s, turn-your-brain-off ride, it does deliver that.
