If you want pure fairy-tale wish fulfillment, this may frustrate you, but if you’re in the mood for something witty, subversive, and surprisingly insightful about timing and desire, it’s an easy yes.

My Best Friend’s Wedding is trying to flip the rom-com formula by making the heroine messy, selfish, and painfully human, and it deserves credit for not taking the easy, wish-fulfillment route. The catch is you have to be willing to spend most of the movie with a protagonist who’s actively sabotaging someone else’s happiness, and if that kind of secondhand embarrassment or moral queasiness isn’t fun for you, it’ll feel more irritating than charming. The romance itself can also feel lopsided—Michael is written and played a bit too blandly to fully sell the life-or-death emotional stakes—so the conflict can come off as contrived and predictable. Still, the cast has spark (especially Cameron Diaz and the supporting comedic energy), and if you like rom-coms with sharper edges and a lead who doesn’t always “deserve” the happy ending, you may find it refreshingly honest.
