MouseHunt (1997)

MouseHunt is a rare kind of family comedy: a live-action cartoon with the craftsmanship of a big studio set-piece movie, where every creaking floorboard and flying object feels choreographed like a ballet of bad luck. Gore Verbinski shoots the dilapidated mansion like a storybook funhouse, and Nathan Lane with Lee Evans turn desperation into an oddly endearing double act—equal parts vaudeville, panic attack, and brotherly warmth. The tone is gleefully chaotic and relentlessly physical, building from small annoyances to gloriously over-the-top mayhem without needing cheap cynicism. It’s not for viewers who dislike slapstick or squeamish gags, but if you’re in the mood for inventive, high-energy comedy that commits fully to its premise, this one still hits like a well-aimed mousetrap.

MouseHunt is trying to be a live-action cartoon: two desperate brothers trapped in an escalating war with an almost supernaturally clever mouse, with Gore Verbinski leaning hard into elaborate set pieces and physical comedy. If you enjoy old-school slapstick where pain is the punchline, you’ll probably have fun, but if you need sharp dialogue, grounded characters, or jokes with a bit of wit, this can feel loud, repetitive, and strangely hollow. The pacing is basically “bigger gag, bigger mess” until it wears thin, and some of the mayhem (including animal peril and gross-out bits) may be more stressful than funny for family viewing. Still, the production design is impressively detailed and the leads commit fully, so it’s worth a try if you’re in the mood for chaotic, Looney Tunes-style destruction rather than a warm, character-driven comedy.
