Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is the kind of gloriously overstuffed, pedal-to-the-metal sequel that doesn’t so much tell a story as hurl you through a neon fantasy funhouse of fights, monsters, and realm-colliding spectacle. It has a sincere, almost endearing commitment to excess—new warriors arriving like trading cards come to life, sets and costumes that scream ’90s sci-fi mythmaking, and an energy that rarely pauses long enough to catch its breath. If you can meet it on its own terms, the movie becomes a cult curio: loud, schlocky, and weirdly watchable in the way “beautiful trash cinema” can be, especially with friends and a sense of humor. It’s not for viewers craving grounded action or polished effects, but for anyone who wants nonstop combat and campy fantasy bravado, it delivers exactly that.

The problem is it feels like a highlight reel stitched together with thin story logic, stiff dialogue, and performances that rarely rise above “people in costumes saying plot words.” The effects and creature work have a bargain-bin, mid-’90s TV look that can make the big moments land with a thud instead of a thrill, and the constant fights start to feel noisy rather than exciting. If you love the franchise and can enjoy it as campy, chaotic fan service, you might have fun spotting characters and powers—but if you want coherent storytelling, convincing acting, or action with weight, this one will test your patience fast.
