The Mighty (1998)

What makes The Mighty special is the way it turns two kids the world has written off into a legend of their own making—without ever feeling like a cheap “inspirational” lecture. Peter Chelsom balances rough edges with a buoyant, storybook sense of adventure, letting imagination and humor sit right alongside real danger and real pain, so the sweetness feels earned. Kieran Culkin and Elden Henson are terrific together, building a friendship that’s funny, fierce, and quietly devastating in how much it changes them. It does venture into darker territory with bullying and a tense kidnapping thread, so it’s not a pure comfort watch, but if you’re on the fence, it’s the kind of modest, big-hearted film that stays with you because it believes—credibly—that being a “freak” can be a form of courage.

The Mighty is aiming for an uplifting, odd-couple friendship story that mixes kid-level adventure with some genuinely heavy subject matter, and you can feel it reaching for that “life is bigger than your limitations” punch. The problem is it often pushes so hard for tears and inspiration that the beats can feel prepackaged, with familiar underdog tropes and a few too-neat turns that may pull you out of the moment. If you’re allergic to sentimental, message-forward dramas that practically cue you when to cry, this might feel manipulative and a bit predictable despite the serious themes. Still, Elden Henson and Kieran Culkin sell the bond well, and when the film relaxes into their friendship, it’s warm and affecting in a way that can work if you’re in the mood for a heartfelt crowd-pleaser.
