A Life Less Ordinary (1997)
A couple of angels, O'Reilly and Jackson, are sent to Earth to make sure that their next supervised love-connection succeeds. They follow Celine, a spoiled rich girl who has just accidentally shot a suitor and, due to a misunderstanding, is kidnapped by janitor Robert. Although Celine quickly frees herself, she stays with Robert for thrills. O'Reilly and Jackson pursue, hoping to unite the prospective lovers.
What people think about A Life Less Ordinary
A Life Less Ordinary is the kind of romantic comedy that takes a flying leap off the predictable and somehow sticks the landing, blending divine mischief, crime-caper absurdity, and sincere swoon into one stylish rush. Danny Boyle directs with restless, pop-art energy, turning every scene into something a little weirder, funnier, or more magical than you expect, while Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz make an unlikely pairing feel oddly irresistible. The vibe is mischievous and high-voltage—part fairy tale, part screwball, part late-’90s cool—helped enormously by a soundtrack that keeps the movie humming like it’s daring you not to enjoy yourself. It won’t be for anyone craving grounded realism or gentle romance, but if you want an imaginative, go-for-broke love story with angels on the sidelines and sparks in the foreground, this is a delightfully offbeat ride.
A Life Less Ordinary is clearly trying to mash up a quirky, romantic crime caper with a whimsical angel-on-a-mission fantasy, and you can feel the ambition to be stylish, offbeat, and charming. The problem is it rarely settles on a consistent tone, so scenes that want to be heartfelt, funny, or edgy often trip over each other and make the story feel more contrived than magical. If you need coherent character motivation and a plot that builds cleanly, this can come off messy and oddly tedious despite the constant motion. Still, if you’re in the mood for a ’90s oddball experiment with some visual flair and a “swing for the fences” vibe, you might enjoy it as a curious, uneven ride rather than a satisfying romance.
