Character (1997)

Character is one of those rare historical dramas that feels carved out of stone: stark, elegant, and quietly thunderous, with a moral gravity that pulls you in from the first frame. Set in pre-war Holland, it turns a father-and-son battle into something almost mythic, pairing meticulous period craftsmanship with an atmosphere so tense you can practically taste the cold air and ink-stained ambition. Jan Decleir’s bailiff is a formidable presence—less a man than a force—while Fedja van Huêt gives the son a fierce, human determination that makes every hard-won step forward feel earned. It’s dark and bitter, sometimes brutal, and not a comfort watch, but if you’re drawn to impeccably made films about pride, power, and the cost of becoming who you are, this one is genuinely gripping.

Character is clearly aiming for a grim, old-world morality tale about ambition, class, and a father-son relationship so toxic it becomes a lifelong cage match, and on that level it’s impressively controlled and visually austere. The problem is it can feel like it’s pressing its message into your forehead—symbolic, heavyhanded, and a bit self-important—so if you dislike “important” dramas that lecture more than they breathe, you may find it cold or predictable. Performances (especially Jan Decleir) give the brutality real weight, but the emotional palette is intentionally harsh and unrelenting, with some disturbing content that isn’t easy to shrug off. If you want subtle character shading and warmth, look elsewhere; if you can handle a severe, fatalistic drama that’s more about endurance than pleasure, it may land for you.
