Hospital! (1997)

Hospital! is the kind of oddball British TV comedy that feels like it was made with a mischievous grin and a license to surprise you, delivering a brisk, gag-packed ride in the spirit of The Naked Gun but with its own off-kilter hospital flavor. Set around a brilliant young brain surgeon in a place where “unorthodox” is putting it mildly, it keeps the tone buoyant and delightfully unpredictable, as if every corridor could hide the next absurd escalation. What makes it worth your time is how fresh it still feels: it’s not chasing realism, it’s chasing laughs, and it lands them with a playful confidence that turns the whole setting into a comedic playground. If you prefer subtle, character-driven humor, this may be too broad and silly, but if you want a unique, amusing one-off that doesn’t do what you expect, it’s an easy yes.

Hospital! is clearly aiming for a British, Naked Gun-style barrage of gags set in a deliberately unorthodox hospital, and you can feel the ambition to launch Channel 5 with something loud and silly. The problem is the joke-to-laugh ratio is rough: the spoofing often lands as dry, repetitive, or just oddly muted for a comedy that wants to be outrageous. There are a few performers who seem capable of more, but the script rarely gives them enough sharp material or time to carry the whole thing. If you love low-budget TV specials, broad medical parody, and don’t mind long stretches of jokes that don’t quite connect, you might tolerate it; if you’re expecting rapid-fire, consistently funny slapstick, this will likely test your patience.
