Matt Damon and Ben Affleck bring grit and humor to friendship that feels real, and Robin Williams delivers a performance so humane it can quietly rearrange your idea of what strength looks like. It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to talky, character-driven dramas, but if you want a film that’s both fiercely smart and disarmingly heartfelt, this one lands with the force of something true.

Good Will Hunting is aiming for a heartfelt “troubled genius learns to stop self-sabotaging” drama, and it mostly gets there on the strength of character work and a sincere emotional core. But if you’re allergic to inspirational arcs that hit familiar beats—court-mandated therapy, tough-love mentor figures, and a pretty tidy path toward growth—you may find it predictable and a bit too polished for its gritty setup. The math-prodigy premise can feel conveniently implausible, and Will’s prickly, defensive attitude makes him more exhausting than charming for some viewers, especially in the romantic subplot. Still, if you can tolerate the formula, the performances (particularly in the therapy scenes) deliver enough honesty to justify the ride.
