Face/Off (1997)
In order to foil a terrorist plot, an FBI agent undergoes facial transplant surgery and assumes the identity of a criminal mastermind. The plan turns sour when the criminal wakes up prematurely and seeks revenge.
What people think about Face/Off
Face/Off is the kind of glorious, high-concept Hollywood swing they barely make anymore: a deliriously clever identity swap that becomes an acting showcase and a full-throttle action opera all at once. John Woo stages violence like choreography—doves, slow motion, and operatic shootouts—while John Travolta and Nicolas Cage have a field day playing not just rivals, but twisted mirror versions of each other, turning every scene into a game of nerves and bravado. Beneath the outrageous premise, there’s a surprisingly sincere current of grief and obsession that gives the spectacle emotional weight, even as the movie gleefully pushes style to the edge of excess. It’s not for the squeamish or the profanity-averse, but if you can embrace its heightened, larger-than-life vibe, it’s one of the most entertaining action thrillers of the ’90s.
Face/Off is John Woo trying to turn a bonkers identity-swap concept into a full-throttle operatic action movie, and to be fair, he commits hard. The problem is you either buy into the absurd science and soap-opera logic immediately, or you’ll spend the whole runtime rolling your eyes while the plot keeps demanding bigger leaps and louder emotions. It’s excessive by design—slow-motion gun ballets, melodrama, and two stars going gloriously over the top—so if you want grounded crime sci-fi or tight storytelling, this will feel like a shiny mess. But if you’re in the mood for maximalist ’90s action and can treat plausibility as optional, it’s still a wildly entertaining showcase for Travolta and Cage.
