Desperate Measures (1998)

Desperate Measures grabs you with a wickedly simple hook: what if the only person who can save your child is the one man you’re sworn to stop—and he knows it. Barbet Schroeder turns that premise into a tight, menacing cat-and-mouse thriller where the hospital corridors feel as dangerous as any back alley, and every choice carries a moral price tag. Michael Keaton is terrific as a calculating killer who weaponizes charm and intellect, while Andy Garcia grounds the film with a raw, believable father’s desperation that keeps the suspense human instead of mechanical. It’s a lean, late-’90s ride with bloody violence and an emotionally tough premise involving a sick child, but if you want a smart, high-stakes thriller built around a genuinely gnarly dilemma, this one delivers.

Desperate Measures is clearly aiming for a high-stakes moral squeeze: a father-cop forced to keep a monster alive because his child’s life depends on it, all wrapped in a slick 90s cat-and-mouse thriller. The problem is the movie leans hard on coincidence and “because the plot needs it” decisions, so the emotional dilemma can feel engineered rather than earned, and the hospital-battleground action often takes over where deeper drama should be. Michael Keaton brings a nasty, charismatic edge and Andy Garcia sells the desperation, but the film’s manipulative beats and formula chase rhythms may leave you rolling your eyes instead of gripping the armrest. If you want grounded realism or nuanced ethical tension, this probably isn’t your night; if you’re fine with a pulpy, implausible thriller carried by performances and momentum, it can still be serviceable.
