Pierce Brosnan brings a steady, human urgency as the scientist who knows what’s coming, while Linda Hamilton gives the film its spine, making the danger feel personal rather than just spectacular. If you’re looking for subtlety or a low body count, this isn’t it, but if you want a tense, crowd-pleasing thriller that delivers big, tangible set pieces and keeps tightening the screws, it’s a tremendously satisfying ride.

Dante’s Peak is trying to be a classic, edge-of-your-seat ’90s disaster ride: a ticking-clock warning, a town that won’t listen, and then nature pulling the plug in spectacular fashion. When it finally erupts, the practical effects and big, crunchy set pieces still deliver, and Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton sell the panic better than the script deserves. The problem is the long, talky runway and very familiar character beats—lots of “why won’t anyone evacuate?” scenes, clunky dialogue, and choices that can feel more plot-required than believable. If you want sharp writing or nuanced characters, you’ll likely roll your eyes; if you just want a straightforward catastrophe movie with memorable peril and a few genuinely tense moments, it does the job.
