Con Air (1997)

Con Air is the kind of gloriously unhinged ’90s action thriller that knows exactly what it is: a loud, propulsive, high-altitude pressure cooker where every scene is engineered to top the last. Simon West directs with slick, music-video swagger, turning a prison-transport plane into a flying carnival of danger, while Nicolas Cage anchors the madness with earnest, bruised-heart heroism and John Malkovich purrs out villainy with ice-cold intelligence. The vibe is pure popcorn mayhem—quippy, outrageous, and surprisingly well-paced—packed with a stacked cast that treats the material like a big, delicious dare. It’s not for anyone looking for realism or restraint (and it is very R-rated), but if you want a maximalist action ride that delivers on its premise with style and wicked fun, this one still rips.

Con Air is trying to be a loud, crowd-pleasing 90s action carnival: a simple “one good guy in a sky full of monsters” setup built for big stunts, bigger one-liners, and nonstop escalation. The problem is it’s proudly implausible, with thin character work and an uneven tone that swings between grim violence and cartoonish theatrics, so if you need grounded stakes or smart plotting, you’ll feel your patience evaporate.
