Chasing Amy (1997)

Chasing Amy is special because it takes the talky, funny rhythms of Kevin Smith’s world and aims them at something tender and genuinely risky: the messy ways desire, pride, and identity collide when people stop fitting into the boxes we’ve built for them. It’s a romantic comedy-drama with razor-sharp dialogue that can make you laugh one minute and then catch you off guard with an ache of recognition the next, anchored by performances that feel lived-in rather than “movie cute.” What makes it linger is its willingness to be honest and complicated instead of tidy, letting characters say the wrong thing, mean the right thing, and learn too late how much words can cost. It’s not for everyone—some of its 1990s perspective can feel dated and it’s unabashedly conversational—but if you want a smart, heartfelt film that treats relationships like real emotional terrain, it’s absolutely worth chasing.

Chasing Amy is clearly trying to be a smart, talky indie romance about insecurity, identity, and how messy love gets when your expectations don’t match reality. The problem is that its handling of queer sexuality can feel clumsy and dated, with enough “conversion narrative” vibes and offhand homophobia to make some viewers uncomfortable rather than enlightened. If you’re sensitive to 90s bro-humor, immature banter, or characters who say ugly things and the film doesn’t always interrogate them cleanly, this may play less like edgy honesty and more like infantile provocation. That said, there’s real heart in the performances and a few genuinely sharp, emotionally observant moments—just don’t go in expecting a modern, nuanced queer love story.
