The Brave (1997)

Johnny Depp’s direction keeps the camera close to Raphael’s world, finding rough poetry in a place most movies would turn away from, while his performance (and Elpidia Carrillo’s quietly devastating presence) makes the story feel less like shock cinema and more like a painful moral reckoning. The vibe is raw and oppressive, fueled by anger and tenderness in equal measure, building an almost unbearable tension as one man tries to buy his family a future with the only thing he thinks he has left.
