Brother (1997)

Balabanov captures post-Soviet Saint Petersburg as a cold, lived-in maze of markets, stairwells, and dim apartments, and he lets the violence land with a matter-of-fact precision that’s more gripping than any operatic gunplay. Sergei Bodrov Jr. gives Danila a quiet, watchful charisma that makes you lean in, even when you’re not sure whether to admire him or fear what he’s becoming. It’s harsh, sometimes morally queasy, and deliberately unglamorous—so it’s not for viewers looking for a crowd-pleasing action rush—but if you want a tense, atmospheric classic that doubles as a portrait of a society in shock, this one sticks.

Brother is clearly aiming for a gritty, street-level snapshot of post-Soviet Petersburg, following a lost young veteran who drifts into crime with a strangely calm sense of purpose. The problem is that the film can feel morally cold: violence arrives casually, consequences often feel muted, and if you’re looking for a clear “good vs. bad” arc, you may find it unsettling rather than thrilling. The storytelling is also a bit ragged, with uneven editing and side threads that wander in and out, which can make the plot feel fuzzier than it should.
