On Guard (1997)

On Guard is the kind of gloriously old-fashioned swashbuckler that reminds you why capes, duels, and intrigue became timeless in the first place: it’s fast, witty, romantic, and staged with a craftsman’s delight in spectacle. Philippe de Broca keeps the pace buoyant and the world richly textured, while the swordplay lands with real snap and clarity instead of shaky confusion. At the center, Daniel Auteuil gives Lagardère warmth and mischievous charm, making the hero feel human even when the film is having operatic fun with disguises, honor, and revenge. If you’re allergic to melodrama or prefer grim realism, this may feel unapologetically classical—but if you want sheer entertainment with a beating heart, it’s a terrific evening at the movies.

On Guard wants to be a big, old-school French swashbuckler: noble revenge, secret heirs, disguises, and crowd-pleasing swordplay, all played straight. When it’s clicking, Philippe de Broca delivers lively duels and a strong central performance from Daniel Auteuil that gives the hero real warmth. The problem is the film’s bulky, overstuffed structure and uneven pacing, which can make it feel long and a bit flat between the action beats, with staging that doesn’t always add the spark the story needs.
