All Over Me (1997)

All Over Me feels special because it captures that raw, half-feral moment of adolescence when friendship, desire, and identity collide—and it does it with an honesty that never turns into exploitation. Set in a gritty, music-soaked slice of ’90s Hell’s Kitchen, the film moves with the pulse of basement shows and late-night sidewalks, while quietly building an emotional ache you can’t shake. Alison Folland is terrific as Claude, giving a performance full of guarded longing and sudden bravery, and Alex Sichel directs with real compassion for kids trying to survive a world that doesn’t make room for them. It’s not a glossy romance or a neat coming-out story—it's tougher, messier, and sometimes painful—but if you want a sensitive, realistic teen drama that earns every feeling, this one lingers.

All Over Me is clearly trying to capture a raw, lived-in slice of ’90s New York—teen restlessness, music-scene energy, and the messy fear and desire around queer self-discovery—while also taking a hard look at casual homophobia and violence. The problem is it often leans on mood over momentum, so the pacing can feel sluggish and the drama sometimes lands as pushed or contrived rather than organically heartbreaking. Performances are uneven, and one key character can come off grating enough to make the central friendship more exhausting than compelling. If you want a tightly plotted romance or a nuanced, subtle coming-of-age, this may test your patience, but if you’re drawn to scrappy indie atmosphere and imperfect characters in a specific time-and-place, there’s still something honest to latch onto.
