Affliction (1998)

Affliction is the kind of crime thriller that feels less like a puzzle to be solved than a storm system rolling in, powered by Paul Schrader’s unblinking direction and a sense of dread that’s as intimate as it is relentless. Nick Nolte gives a raw, lived-in performance as a small-town cop whose grip on order—at work, at home, in his own head—starts to slip, while James Coburn is quietly terrifying as the father who casts the longest shadow, and Sissy Spacek brings a bruised humanity to the edges of the chaos. The film’s mystery hooks you, but what stays with you is the tragic, psychologically precise way it shows how violence and shame can be inherited, normalized, and finally detonated. It’s bleak and emotionally heavy, so it won’t be everyone’s idea of a “good time,” but if you want a serious, gripping character study that hits with the force of great American tragedy, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

Affliction is aiming for a grim, character-first descent into paranoia and inherited violence, using a small-town “maybe it’s murder” mystery as the fuse. Paul Schrader keeps the tone cold and relentless, and the narration can feel like it’s explaining the tragedy rather than letting you experience it, which makes the film come off a bit heavy-handed. The pacing is deliberately slow and the bleakness doesn’t really let up, so if you want a satisfying thriller with momentum or catharsis, this will likely feel punishing and emotionally numbing. That said, Nick Nolte is raw and hard to look away from, and James Coburn brings real bite, so it’s worth it if you’re in the mood for a harsh, adult drama more than a conventional mystery.
