Two If by Sea (1996)
Frank O'Brien, a petty thief, and his 7-year-long girlfriend Roz want to put an end to their unsteady lifestyle and just do that last job, which involves stealing a valuable painting. Frank takes Roz to an island on the coast of New England, where he wants to sell the painting and also hopes that their sagging relationship will get a positive push back up. Not everything goes as planned.
What people think about Two If by Sea
Two If by Sea is the kind of breezy, offbeat romantic caper that lives or dies on charm—and thanks to Sandra Bullock and Denis Leary, it’s got charm to spare. Their chemistry gives the movie a spark that turns a simple “one last job” setup into something warmer and more human, with banter that feels lived-in rather than cute-for-cute’s-sake. The New England island setting adds a cozy, windswept vibe that keeps the story light even when the scheme gets messy, and the film moves with the easy rhythm of a date-night comedy that doesn’t ask too much of you. It’s not for viewers hunting a razor-sharp heist or a prestige romance, but if you want a fun, likable diversion powered by two stars enjoying each other’s timing, it’s an unexpectedly pleasant watch.
Two If by Sea wants to be a breezy romantic caper: two longtime lovers, one last heist, and a cozy New England island meant to reset their lives and their relationship. The problem is it rarely finds a rhythm—jokes land with a thud, the story feels oddly sleepy for a “last job” setup, and the dialogue can come off more grating than charming. Even with likable stars and a pleasant coastal backdrop, the chemistry and momentum many people expect from this kind of comedy-romance just aren’t consistently there. If you’re hoping for sharp banter, real spark, or a lively crime plot, you may leave disappointed; if you only need a low-stakes, mildly quirky date-night movie, you might tolerate it.
