The Stupids (1996)

The Stupids is the kind of broad, brightly colored family comedy that commits so hard to its own logic that it becomes weirdly endearing: a suburban clan so cheerfully clueless they can turn a routine garbage pickup into an accidental adventure. Directed by John Landis, it plays like a live-action cartoon—lots of slapstick momentum, escalating misunderstandings, and PG-rated mayhem where explosions and gunfire land with Looney Tunes bounce instead of menace. Tom Arnold throws himself into the role with fearless sincerity, and the movie’s best joke is how confidently the Stupids misread every situation while somehow stumbling into the right place at the wrong time. If you like your comedies subtle, this won’t convert you, but if you’re in the mood for goofy, high-energy silliness that the whole family can watch, it’s a surprisingly fun ride.

The Stupids is clearly aiming for broad, cartoonish family slapstick where everyone’s obliviousness becomes the joke, and John Landis tries to keep it moving with spies, explosions, and misunderstandings. The problem is the central gag wears thin fast, and the humor leans so heavily on “they’re dumb” that the writing rarely finds sharper twists or genuinely surprising laughs. If you need clever wordplay, satirical bite, or even consistent silliness, this can feel like a noisy, repetitive sketch stretched to feature length. That said, it’s PG, mostly harmless, and might work as background viewing for very young kids or for viewers who enjoy intentionally dopey, live-action cartoon energy without expecting much payoff.
