Spy Hard (1996)
The evil Gen. Rancor has his sights set on world domination, and only one man can stop him: Dick Steele, also known as Agent WD-40. Rancor needs to obtain a computer circuit for the missile that he is planning to fire, so Steele teams up with Veronique Ukrinsky, a KGB agent whose father designed the chip. Together they try to locate the evil mastermind's headquarters, where Veronique's father and several other hostages are being held.
What people think about Spy Hard
Spy Hard is the kind of gleefully stupid spy spoof that lives or dies on timing, and Leslie Nielsen—stone-faced as Agent WD-40—has the miraculous gift of making even the flimsiest gag land like a well-placed punchline. The movie barrels along in a pinball rhythm of slapstick set pieces, ridiculous gadgets, and winking genre references, with Nicollette Sheridan playing the glamorous straight line to Nielsen’s deadpan chaos. Its vibe is broad, noisy, and proudly cartoonish, more “late-night laughs” than clever satire, and it never pretends to be anything else. If you like your comedies subtle, this isn’t your mission—but if you’re in the mood for shameless silliness and a reliable Nielsen grin, it’s an easy yes.
Spy Hard is trying to be a rapid-fire spoof of Bond-style action thrillers, basically an excuse to throw Leslie Nielsen into a nonstop parade of sight gags, puns, and pop-culture parodies. The problem is that a lot of the humor feels secondhand and oddly lazy, with jokes that land more through volume than cleverness, and a “plot” that mostly exists to shuttle you to the next sketch. Direction and pacing can feel scattershot, so if you’re hoping for the tight, escalating absurdity of Nielsen’s best work, this may come off as a bargain-bin imitation. Still, Nielsen’s deadpan commitment and a few playful set pieces can be mildly amusing if you’re in the mood for silly, disposable 90s spoofing and don’t mind more groans than laughs.
