Solo (1996)

Solo has the scrappy, late-’90s charm of a B-movie that knows exactly what it came to deliver: propulsive jungle action with a surprisingly earnest heart beating under the gunfire. Mario Van Peebles gives the title android a likable, grounded presence, turning what could’ve been a cold killing-machine premise into a pulpy riff on conscience and freedom that actually lands some pathos between the explosions. Director Norberto Barba keeps the pace brisk and the set pieces satisfyingly loud, building toward a classic man-versus-upgraded-model showdown that scratches the “payback thriller” itch without getting bogged down in mythology. It won’t convert anyone allergic to lean, straightforward action filmmaking, but if you want a fun, no-nonsense sci-fi shoot-’em-up with a humanizing twist, this one earns its keep.

Solo is clearly trying to be a heartfelt “killer robot learns humanity” action thriller with a bit of jungle-war grit and a man-vs-machine showdown, and you can see why that pitch sounded good in the ’90s. The problem is the execution: the characters are thin, the beats are painfully predictable, and the action often feels under-staged, like it’s going through the motions rather than delivering real tension. Mario Van Peebles has some earnest presence and there are a few fun B-movie touches (especially once the upgraded android enters), but the performances and dialogue can slide into hammy territory fast. If you’re after sharp sci-fi ideas or top-tier action choreography, skip it; if you can enjoy a dated, low-stakes, straight-to-video-style robot romp, it might just fill a lazy afternoon.
