Normal Life (1996)
Chris Anderson and his wife Pam live a fairly normal life until Chris loses his job on the police force and secretly turns to robbing banks to make his wife's dreams come true. Upon discovering his secret, she joins his deadly crime wave and together they terrorize an unsuspecting suburban town.
What people think about Normal Life
Normal Life is special because it turns a familiar “lovers on the run” premise into something unnervingly intimate, like you’re watching a marriage crack in real time and the crime is just the pressure valve. John McNaughton directs with a cool, almost documentary plainness that makes every bad decision feel plausible, and it gives Luke Perry and especially Ashley Judd room to deliver raw, fearless performances that don’t ask for your approval so much as your attention. The vibe is tense, sweaty, and confrontational—romance as a high-voltage addiction, drama as a slow-motion wreck you can’t quite look away from. It’s definitely not for everyone given the R-rated sex, violence, and drug use, but if you want a crime drama that studies desire and self-destruction with real bite, this one sticks with you.
Normal Life is clearly aiming for a gritty, lovers-on-the-edge crime romance, showing how a marriage and mounting debt can push two people into terrible choices. The problem is the execution: it wants to feel like a tense descent, but the storytelling can turn messy, especially as it builds toward a final stretch that doesn’t land as cleanly as it thinks it does. If you’re expecting a tight, clever bank-robbery thriller, you may find it more sweaty melodrama than suspense, with heavy sex, drugs, and volatility doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Still, Ashley Judd and Luke Perry commit to the chaos, and if you’re in the mood for a rough-edged 90s character spiral rather than a polished crime plot, it can be watchable.
