Muppet Treasure Island (1996)
Young Jim Hawkins and his two best friends, Gonzo and Rizzo, embark on a voyage across the high seas in search of buried treasure, but soon find that not everyone onboard can be trusted.
What people think about Muppet Treasure Island
Muppet Treasure Island is that rare family adventure that feels like it was made by people who genuinely believe fun is a virtue—swashbuckling romance with danger, but always with a wink and a song. Brian Henson lets the Muppets run wild through a classic tale, stuffing it with brisk pacing, bright gags, and tunes that stick around long after the credits, without ever losing the story’s sense of voyage-and-discovery. And then there’s Tim Curry’s Long John Silver: so committed, so charismatic, and so perfectly game opposite felt chaos that he becomes the movie’s beating heart. If you’re allergic to punny humor and joyous theatricality, it may not convert you—but if you want a cheerful, high-spirited adventure that plays for kids and adults at the same time, this one’s a treasure.
Muppet Treasure Island is clearly aiming to mash up a classic adventure story with that familiar Muppet chaos, and on paper it’s a perfect fit for families. The catch is that the script and songs don’t always have the sharpness you expect from the best Muppet outings, and the pacing can feel a bit sleepy between the bigger gags. If you’re coming for peak “Muppety” energy or a standout kid-hero performance, this one may land as oddly tame and forgettable. Still, Tim Curry’s Long John Silver brings real commitment and charisma, and if your bar is “light, harmless fun with a few solid laughs,” it can do the job.
