Mars Attacks! (1996)

Mars Attacks! is Tim Burton cutting loose with a big-budget prank: a gleefully garish, candy-colored invasion movie that loves old 1950s sci-fi while mercilessly roasting our modern faith in leaders, experts, and “reasonable” diplomacy. It’s packed with outrageous imagery and a stacked cast playing it straight just long enough for the comedy to land, then tipping into deliciously anarchic absurdity. The vibe is campy, mean in a cartoon way, and proudly inventive—more like flipping through a twisted pulp comic than settling in for a heroic blockbuster. If you’re allergic to dark humor or easily rattled by deliberately grotesque gags, it may be too much, but if you want a sci-fi comedy with real teeth and zero respect for convention, this one is a blast.
