I Love You, I Love You Not (1996)
A school student and her European-born grandmother share sad stories of their lives.
What people think about I Love You, I Love You Not
What makes I Love You, I Love You Not worth your time is the way it turns an intimate conversation between two women into something quietly haunting and strangely comforting, like a diary read aloud in a dimly lit room. Claire Danes brings a raw, searching immediacy to teenage emotion, while Jeanne Moreau carries the weight of a European past with a gaze that seems to hold entire chapters between sentences, and together they make the film feel lived-in even when it’s at its most stylized. The tone is melancholy and romantic in a reflective, story-within-a-story way, more about how people survive love and loss than about big plot twists. It won’t be for everyone—if you want brisk pacing or neat answers, it may feel elusive—but if you’re in the mood for performance-driven drama that lingers like a remembered confession, it’s an underrated watch.
I Love You, I Love You Not is clearly aiming for a tender, intergenerational tearjerker, using a teen’s coming-of-age alongside her grandmother’s painful European past to show how love and trauma echo across time. The problem is it often reaches for emotion with a heavy hand—contrived turns, cliché-riddled dialogue, and an uneven script make the drama feel manufactured rather than earned. Worse, its handling of Holocaust-adjacent material can come off simplified and inauthentic, which may leave you uncomfortable instead of moved. If you’re drawn to gentle, sentimental melodrama you might find a few heartfelt moments and strong intentions, but if you want nuanced storytelling or careful historical weight, this probably isn’t worth your time.
