Flipper (1996)

Flipper is the kind of family adventure that earns its charm the old-fashioned way: sunlit Florida Keys atmosphere, a sincere coming-of-age bond, and underwater sequences that feel like summer itself, shimmering and alive. Elijah Wood grounds the story with a believable mix of sulk and wonder, while Paul Hogan brings an easy, weathered warmth that turns the island into a place you want to live in for two hours. The film’s craftsmanship shines in its aquatic photography and dolphin work—often impressively tactile for its era—and it folds in an environmental conscience without lecturing, letting the stakes rise naturally with just enough edge for a PG rating. If you’re allergic to earnest ’90s sentiment or prefer your adventures more cynical, it may feel simple, but if you want a crowd-pleasing, big-hearted escape with real waves and real feeling, this one delivers.

Flipper (1996) is clearly aiming for a warm, sun-soaked family adventure about a lonely kid bonding with nature and learning to connect with his gruff but decent uncle. The problem is it’s built from very familiar parts—cartoonish villain, telegraphed beats, and a “message” that feels prepackaged—so if you’re hoping for real suspense or surprising character work, it can feel thin and a bit corny. It also includes some genuinely upsetting animal peril (including a dolphin being shot), which may be a dealbreaker for sensitive viewers or younger kids. Still, the Florida Keys setting is pleasant, the dolphin footage has charm, and if you want an easy, low-stakes ’90s family movie where you already know exactly where it’s headed, it does that job.
